Where to stay in Ahilyanagar
Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.
Where you stay in Ahilyanagar turns on the town or the fort. The lanes around the old town keep the bazaars, the temples, and the museums within a walk, and staying downtown suits anyone here for the city. Dry plains spread beyond.
The old fort stands to the east. Out toward the fort and Shirdi, the town gives way to the round fort, the hilltop tomb, and the road to the shrines of the north. A room out of town trades the streets for the quiet plain, the old walls, and the pilgrim road to Shirdi.
The plateau runs dry for miles. Stay downtown for the city, or out for the fort. The sultanate city sits on the Deccan plain.
About Ahilyanagar
Ahilyanagar is the old sultanate city of the Deccan.
What is Ahilyanagar known for?
On the dry plateau of Maharashtra in India, long called Ahmednagar, it grew around a great fort, and it keeps the round fort where Nehru wrote his book in prison, the pleasure garden of the Nizam Shahi kings, the hilltop tomb of Salabat Khan above the plain, and the road to the shrines of Shirdi nearby. The dry plateau spreads all around. An old fort stands on the plain.
What are the main landmarks in Ahilyanagar?
The Ahmednagar fort is the pride of the city. The great round fort on the plain, where Chand Bibi fought Akbar and Nehru later wrote his book, is the emblem of the town, downtown. A domed tomb crowns a hill.
The tomb of Salabat Khan rises on a ridge above the plain nearby, while the Farah Bagh garden, the tank museum, and the Shirdi road mark the country around Ahilyanagar.
What is the history of Ahilyanagar?
Ahmednagar was a sultan's capital. In fourteen ninety a rebel founded the Nizam Shahi kingdom here and built a great round fort, and the city became a seat of Deccan power. A queen defended the fort.
When the Mughals came, the queen Chand Bibi held the fort against Akbar's armies, and her defence became a legend of the Deccan. The fort held a famous prisoner. In our own age the British jailed Nehru and the leaders of the freedom struggle in the fort, and there Nehru wrote his great book, The Discovery of India.
The town kept its old marks. Its round fort, its Nizam Shahi gardens, and the hilltop tomb of Salabat Khan came down through the years, and Ahilyanagar grew as a market and army town of the Deccan, keeping its fort, its tombs, and its history. The old fort still stands on the plain.
Ahilyanagar keeps its sultanate city on the Deccan.
Where is Ahilyanagar?
Ahilyanagar lies in the west of Maharashtra in India, on the dry Deccan plateau. The city sits on a plain by the Sina river, ringed by low bare hills, in a hot dry land of the rain-shadow country, with the Western Ghats far to the west and the Deccan spreading east. The plain runs flat and dry.
Low treeless ridges close off the horizon on every side of Ahilyanagar.
What is the climate of Ahilyanagar?
Ahilyanagar has a hot, dry plateau climate. Blazing summers and mild winters cross the Deccan, with fierce heat before a scant monsoon and cool clear winters in the rain-shadow land. Dry heat grips the summer plain.
Nights turn chilly once winter arrives.
How do you get to Ahilyanagar?
Ahilyanagar lies in western Maharashtra in India, on the road and rail east of Pune. Trains and the highway run to it across the plateau from Pune, and roads lead north to Shirdi and the shrines. Pilgrims pass through to Shirdi.
Pune lies west up the line.
