About Chānda

Coal made the modern name.

What is Chānda known for?

Chandrapur carries the label City of Black Gold for the seams worked across Chandrapur district, but its older claim is the Gond fort whose wall still rings the inner town and gave the place its name. The Chandrapur Fort Wall runs between the gates. Beside the Achaleshwar gate stands the Gond Raja Chhatri, and out at Lalpeth the sixteen colossal stone images include Anna Purna and Ganga.

What are the main landmarks in Chānda?

Four sets of stonework carry the city's name. The Chandrapur Fort Wall is the oldest of them, a Gond circuit pierced by gates, and the Achaleshwar gate stands beside the Gond Raja Chhatri raised for the Gond rajas. Lalpeth holds the rest.

There the sixteen colossal stone images run in a line, Anna Purna and Ganga among them, cut from single blocks and left standing on open ground.

What is the history of Chānda?

Khandkya Ballal Shah founded it. The Gond king raised a fort here about 1300, and the settlement that grew inside and around its wall took the name Chanda from that stronghold, which is the name the city still answers to alongside Chandrapur. Gond rule left the wall and the gates.

The Gond Raja Chhatri beside the Achaleshwar gate belongs to that dynasty, a memorial in stone to the line that held the town and the country around it. Stone carving outlasted the court. At Lalpeth the sixteen colossal images, Anna Purna and Ganga among them, still stand in the open, cut in an age when the fort and not the mine set the town's shape.

Coal rewrote the rest of the story. The seams under Chandrapur district turned a walled Gond town into a mining and administrative centre, and the label City of Black Gold followed from that work rather than from anything the rajas built. Chandrapur became the district headquarters.

Its municipal corporation administers the ground inside and beyond the old wall, where the Erai River and the Zarpat still mark the limits the fort builders chose.

Where is Chānda?

Two rivers meet at the town. The Erai River and the Zarpat come together at Chandrapur, and the ground they drain runs out into the Vidarbha interior of Mahārāshtra in India, low country where coal seams lie close under the soil. Chandrapur district takes its name from the city.

That district wraps the built-up area on every side, tropical ground well inland from any coast, with the mining country in one quarter and the walled core of Chānda at its middle.

What is the climate of Chānda?

Heat governs the calendar here. The tropical position of the Vidarbha interior gives Chānda a long hot season, broken by rains that swell the Erai River and the Zarpat and green the coal country around Chandrapur district before the dry months return. Nights ease a little.

The rivers fall back after the rains, running low past the fort wall until the next wet season builds them again.

How do you get to Chānda?

Chandrapur is the seat of its district, so the roads of the surrounding coal country converge on the city rather than passing it by, and journeys within Chandrapur district generally change here. Two rivers frame the approach. The Erai River and the Zarpat meet beside the town, and the fort quarter lies close to that meeting, which keeps the historic core near whichever way an arrival comes in.

Walking serves inside the wall.
