What is the history of Chittorgarh?
Chittor was the seat of Mewar. From its hilltop fort the Sisodia Rajputs ruled the land of Mewar for centuries, and the great ridge bristled with palaces, temples, and towers. The fort stood many sieges.
Three times invading armies stormed the rock, and each time the Rajputs rode out to fight to the last against overwhelming odds. The fort holds a grave and honoured memory. When defeat drew near, the women of the fort chose death over dishonour in the fires of jauhar, and their sacrifice passed into the legend of Rajasthan.
Peace came in the end. After the last fall the ruler moved his seat to Udaipur, and Chittor was left to its silence, yet it kept its walls, its towers, and its temples down the years. The old fort still guards the ridge.

The city sits below a long rocky hill by the Gambheri river, in a dry land of fields and low ranges, with the fort ridge rising sheer above the town and the Aravallis stretching away to the west.
