Where to stay in Jhālāwār

The practical side of choosing where to sleep.

Two towns, one choice. Jhālāwār keeps the Garh Palace and the administrative weight, and staying there puts the princely architecture on the doorstep. Jhalrapatan is the older trading seat and the one with the temples, including Sitaleswar Mahadeva, which makes it the better base for anyone here for the buildings rather than the offices.

The Bhawani Mandi road runs south-west for the rest of Jhalawar district.

About Jhālāwār

Jhālāwār and Jhalrapatan are twins.

What is Jhālāwār known for?

The two towns were founded by Jhala Rajputs at the end of the eighteenth century and sit a short distance apart, sharing the history of one princely state. Water and stone define the pair. Lakes, forts, and temples are what the district is visited for, and the finest of them, the temple of Sitaleswar Mahadeva, is older than either town by a thousand years.

What are the main landmarks in Jhālāwār?

The Garh Palace is the set piece. Jhala Madan Singh began it in the eighteen-forties as the seat of a state that had just been separated from Kota, and the town is still arranged around it. Older by far is the temple of Sitaleswar Mahadeva near Jhalrapatan, which dates from about the year six hundred and is the finest thing surviving anywhere in the district.

Forts and lakes fill in the rest.

What is the history of Jhālāwār?

Jhālāwār began as a barracks. Jhala Zalim Singh, then Dewan of Kota State, founded it in 1791 as Chaoni Umedpura, a cantonment in dense forest, sited so that Maratha invaders coming from Malwa towards Kota could be met before they reached the Hadoti states. He liked the hunting and built a town around the camp.

Colonel Todd, passing through in December 1821, described a well-established township of large houses and havelis behind its walls. The English separated Jhalawar from Kota State in 1838 and gave it to Jhala Madan Singh, grandson of Zalim Singh, who became its first ruler and began the Garh Palace. Rana Bhawani Singh ruled from 1899 to 1929 and left the state its public works.

Opium, oil-seeds, and cotton paid for all of it.

Where is Jhālāwār?

Jhālāwār lies at the edge of the Malwa plateau in south-eastern Rajasthan, in the Hadoti country it shares with Kota, Baran, and Bundi. Rivers and lakes give the district its look. They are much of the reason it draws visitors at all in a dry state, and they are why the twin towns were put where they were.

Jhalrapatan stands a short way off. Bhawani Mandi sits out to the south-west of Jhalawar district.

What is the climate of Jhālāwār?

Jhālāwār sits in the subtropical band on the Malwa edge, so the year runs hot before the monsoon and cools afterwards. The plateau helps. Being higher than the Rajasthan plains to the west, the district is greener and better watered than the state's reputation suggests, and the lakes that make its scenery are filled by those rains rather than by any permanent abundance.

How do you get to Jhālāwār?

Most journeys start at Kota. Roads run south-east from it into the Hadoti districts of Rajasthan and on to Jhālāwār. Jhalrapatan is a short run from the town.

Bhawani Mandi sits on the south-western side of Jhalawar district and links the district towards the Malwa plateau, while Baran and Bundi are reached across the Hadoti road network.
