Where to stay in Mettupalayam
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Trains decide this one. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway leaves from Mettupalayam railway station and nowhere else, so the first question for most visitors is how far a bed sits from that platform on the morning of the climb to Ooty. Rooms near the station answer it.
Anyone holding a seat on the rack line gains more from a short walk to the platform than from any other consideration, since that connection to Ooty is the whole reason the town appears on an itinerary. Coimbatore is the fallback. A traveller who wants a wider choice of rooms can stay in the city to the south and drive up, at the cost of losing the walk to the Nilgiri Mountain Railway platform. The Bhavani offers the other side.
Mettupalayam grew on the river's bank under the Nilgiris, and the water side of a municipality covering roughly seven square kilometres keeps its distance from the station and the highway. Black Thunder and the Annai Velankanni Church at Burliar are the town's other named places, and a room on the hill side of Mettupalayam suits a stay built around them rather than around the timetable. Beds are ordinary here, in the sense that Mettupalayam has worked as a district town since its municipality was formed in 1948 and took first-grade status three decades later.
Pollachi is the larger neighbour. Neither is a resort.
About Mettupalayam
The rack railway starts here.
What is Mettupalayam known for?
Mettupalayam railway station is where the Nilgiri Mountain Railway leaves the plain, and the climb from it to Ooty is the only rack railway anywhere in India. Two other names carry weight: Black Thunder, and the Annai Velankanni Church at Burliar. Pollachi is bigger. Nothing else in Coimbatore District is, which leaves Mettupalayam the second town of the district and a working centre rather than a resort one.
What are the main landmarks in Mettupalayam?
Three names carry the town. Mettupalayam railway station is the terminus where the Nilgiri Mountain Railway begins, and it works the only rack line in India, climbing from the plain at the foot of the Nilgiris up to Ooty. Black Thunder is the second.
The third is the Annai Velankanni Church at Burliar, and past those three the list runs out, which suits a town that trades on its railway more than on its monuments.
What is the history of Mettupalayam?
History here is a matter of paperwork. Mettupalayam Municipality was formed in 1948, which is the date the town's own government begins, and the promotion to first-grade municipality followed in 1978. Two dates, then.
Everything before them sits outside what the municipal record carries, and the town's older identity comes instead from its position: the bank of the Bhavani, the foot of the Nilgiris, and the road from Coimbatore that carries traffic on towards Ooty. Both dates belong to the municipality rather than to the settlement, and nothing in the record fixes when people first settled the Bhavani bank below the Nilgiri hills. Rail is the older claim in practice.
Mettupalayam railway station is the starting point of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and the rack system that lifts trains from here into the hills has no counterpart elsewhere in India, which fixed the town's role as the place where the plain hands passengers to the mountain. Coimbatore did the rest. Growth of the city to the south turned Mettupalayam into one of its suburban areas without unmaking the municipality, and within Coimbatore District only Pollachi is larger.
The shape has held. A town of roughly seven square kilometres, second in its district, first at the foot of a railway that starts nowhere else.
Where is Mettupalayam?
The Bhavani sets the ground. Mettupalayam stands on the river's bank where the plain of Coimbatore District ends and the Nilgiri hills begin, which is why the rack railway starts at this point and not further out. Its footprint stays small.
Roughly seven square kilometres hold it, and everything beyond that edge is either the plain running back towards Coimbatore or the climb into the Nilgiris.
What is the climate of Mettupalayam?
The Nilgiris do the work. Mettupalayam lies in the tropical belt at the foot of the range, low enough to hold the heat of the Coimbatore plain, while the hills the rack railway climbs stand in cooler air. The gap is short.
Passengers on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway feel it inside a single journey, which is a large part of why the line from Mettupalayam to Ooty is travelled at all.
How do you get to Mettupalayam?
Mettupalayam railway station is the point. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway starts from its platform and runs to Ooty on the only rack track in India, so the station is both an arrival and a departure for most visitors. Road covers the rest.
The state highway from Coimbatore passes through on its way into the Nilgiris, which keeps Mettupalayam within a short drive of the city it is counted a suburban area of.
