Its fame rests on the Golconda Diamonds, cut from stones the mines sent here.
What is the history of Golconda?
The mud walls came first. Golconda was raised in the 11th century by the Kakatiya ruler Pratāparudra, then ceded to the Bahmani Kings before Sultan Quli fortified the citadel and made it the capital of the Golconda Sultanate. Diamonds followed the crown.
Stones from the Kollur Mine flowed through the fort and made the Golconda Diamonds a byword for wealth, until the old city fell to ruin and only the Qutb Shahi tombs of Hyderabad kept the memory whole.
