Where to stay in Sabzevar

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Sabzevar splits between rooms in the bazaar quarter and rooms out on the plain. The lanes around the bazaar keep the old houses, the shrines, and the market within a walk, and staying downtown suits anyone here for the old city. The old houses hide fine courtyards.

Bazaars fill the lanes. Out toward the tower and the fields, the town gives way to the saffron plots, the grape gardens, and the desert road. A room out of town trades the streets for the old brick tower, the purple saffron fields, and the wide dry plain.

The desert runs east to the sky. Stay downtown for the bazaar, or out for the fields. The bazaar is a short run back from the saffron fields.

About Sabzevar

Sabzevar is the saffron town of western Khorasan.

What is Sabzevar known for?

On the old Silk Road across northeastern Iran, between the desert and the northern hills, it was long a seat of learning and trade, and it keeps a tall ancient brick tower on the plain nearby, the old courtyard houses of its merchants, the saffron and grape fields of the countryside, and the memory of the poets and philosophers it gave the land. The dry plain runs to the desert. The bare hills stand to the north.

What are the main landmarks in Sabzevar?

The Khosrowgerd tower is the mark of old Sabzevar. The tall round brick minaret, standing alone on the plain outside the town from the days of the Seljuk kings, rises over the fields, the emblem of the district, on the plain. Fine old houses fill the town.

The grand courtyard mansions of the old merchants, with their tiled halls and windcatchers, stand in the centre, while the bazaar, the shrines, and the saffron fields mark the country around Sabzevar.

What is the history of Sabzevar?

Sabzevar has bred scholars for ages. An old town of the district once called Beyhaq, it stood on the great road across Khorasan, and its schools and shrines gave the land historians, poets, and philosophers famous in their day. The town loved learning.

Through many centuries its teachers and sages drew students to its halls, and it kept a name for wisdom across Persia. The town stood firm in hard times. When the Mongols swept the land, the people of Sabzevar and its district rose and held out under a bold local rule, one of the few to defy the conquerors for a time.

Trade and saffron fed it. On the caravan road the town traded the goods of east and west, and the fields around gave the purple saffron and sweet grapes it is known for, so that Sabzevar lived by its learning, its land, and its road, keeping its old tower, its houses, and its shrines. The saffron still purples the fields.

Sabzevar keeps its learning and its saffron on the road through Khorasan.
