Where to stay in Mahābād

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Eight sites is enough to justify choosing a side of the city. The Jameh Mosque of Sorkh and the Garmkhaneh of Mahabad Jameh Mosque pull a stay toward the older built-up streets of the Central District, where the Mirza Rasul Bath and خانه رحیمزاده are also logged, and that cluster is the reason most visitors need only one base. Qalat Shah Fortress asks for a different morning.

So does تپه و گورستان چهار دیوار, and so does تپه لاس (گرد لاس), neither of which the record ties to a street address, an opening hour or a road number. Mahabad County has no second seat. Every administrative errand, and most of the heritage list with it, lands inside Mahābād rather than in a town nearby, so the practical question is which corner of the city you want to wake up in rather than which town to book.

Two nights suits the list. One goes to the mosques, the bath and حوضخانه رستم بیگ on foot, the other to whichever of the outlying sites you care about most, with West Azerbaijan province absorbing the overflow if rooms in the county seat are taken. Persian is what the paperwork and the register are written in.

A visitor who arrives with only an evening will get the Central District and little else, which is a fair trade if the mosques are the reason for coming.

About Mahābād

Water buildings do unusual work on this list.

What is Mahābād known for?

Mirza Rasul Bath and حوضخانه رستم بیگ are both logged for Mahābād, and the Garmkhaneh of Mahabad Jameh Mosque is registered as an entry in its own right rather than folded into the mosque it belongs to. Eight sites in all. Qalat Shah Fortress, Jameh Mosque of Sorkh, خانه رحیمزاده, تپه و گورستان چهار دیوار and تپه لاس (گرد لاس) fill out a register that runs from fortification through worship to bathing and burial.

What are the main landmarks in Mahābād?

Qalat Shah Fortress is the heavyweight, and the two mosque entries, Jameh Mosque of Sorkh and the Garmkhaneh of Mahabad Jameh Mosque, are the ones a short visit is most likely to reach on foot. Then the smaller fabric. Mirza Rasul Bath, حوضخانه رستم بیگ and خانه رحیمزاده stand for the domestic side of the register.

Burial ground closes the list. تپه و گورستان چهار دیوار and تپه لاس (گرد لاس) are logged last, undated and undescribed, as the outermost points of what Mahābād keeps.

What is the history of Mahābād?

The record gives Mahābād no founding year, only a register of eight sites and an administrative position. تپه و گورستان چهار دیوار pairs a mound with a burial ground in one entry, تپه لاس (گرد لاس) is logged under two names at once, and Qalat Shah Fortress stands for the defensive layer, none of the three carrying a date, a builder or a measurement. Worship and washing account for the rest. Jameh Mosque of Sorkh, the Garmkhaneh of Mahabad Jameh Mosque, Mirza Rasul Bath, حوضخانه رستم بیگ and خانه رحیمزاده are the entries that survive from the built-up city, and they say more about ordinary use than about any single ruler.

One modern strand is recorded. The description held for Mahābād notes the city's historic significance to Kurdish nationalism, and states that the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization regards it as the capital of Iranian Kurdistan; that is the organisation's designation as the record reports it, not an administrative status. Administratively the picture is simple.

Mahābād is the capital of Mahabad County and of that county's Central District, both run from the city, with West Azerbaijan province above them and Persian as the language of the paperwork. The name also appears in the plain form Mahabad, without the diacritics, which is how most timetables and signs render it.

Where is Mahābād?

Mahabad County surrounds the city, and its Central District is the part that Mahābād actually occupies, inside West Azerbaijan province and inside the temperate band of the northern hemisphere. Mahābād's own record names no river and no ridge. The register does the placing instead: Qalat Shah Fortress marks high ground, تپه لاس (گرد لاس) and تپه و گورستان چهار دیوار mark the mounds, and the mosques mark the middle.

What is the climate of Mahābād?

Seasons here are the province's seasons. Nothing narrower than the temperate band of the northern hemisphere is recorded for Mahābād, and West Azerbaijan province is the unit a traveller has to plan against, since no monthly figure, no prevailing wind and no named sea or range appears in the entry for the city. Indoor entries hedge a bad week.

Mirza Rasul Bath, حوضخانه رستم بیگ and the Garmkhaneh of Mahabad Jameh Mosque are the sheltered part of the list.

How do you get to Mahābād?

Neither an airport nor a rail terminal is named for Mahābād in the record, and no operator or road number appears either, which leaves the province's roads and the county's own network as the way in. Approach is overland. Mahabad County ends at the Central District, and once a traveller is there the Jameh Mosque of Sorkh, Mirza Rasul Bath and خانه رحیمزاده are close enough together to be covered without a vehicle.
