Where to stay in Salmās
Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Aftarkhan Church and حمام قدیمی شیخ are the two entries a visitor without a car can realistically build a day from, which makes the built-up part of the Central District the default base for a stay in Salmās. Start there. A room in that quarter puts the bath and the church within an ordinary morning's walk, leaves the offices of Salmas County close by for anyone here on business, and keeps the drive to everything else down to a single leg out and back.
Saint George Church (Haftvan) pulls in the other direction. Its name carries a second place inside it, and the sources give no road, no distance and no visiting hours for it, so a stay planned around that church should assume a vehicle and a whole morning rather than a stroll. The same applies to the older sites. تپه تبان and کولتپه اهرنجان are named without any note on how to reach them, which is the practical reason to treat them as an excursion instead of an afternoon.
Two nights covers the lot. Persian is the language of the paperwork and of most signage, the city answers to سلماس and to the plain form Salmas as well as to Salmās, and West Azerbaijan province is where you look for a bed if the county seat has nothing free.
About Salmās
What is Salmās known for?
Churches carry this city's name. Saint George Church (Haftvan) and Aftarkhan Church both appear under Salmās, and having two of them on a five-site list makes the Christian heritage of the area the single most distinctive thing the sources hold about the place. Three other entries fill out the sheet. حمام قدیمی شیخ stands for the everyday fabric, while تپه تبان and کولتپه اهرنجان belong to the older ground outside the built-up streets.
What are the main landmarks in Salmās?
Five entries, two of them churches. Saint George Church (Haftvan) and Aftarkhan Church are the pair that give Salmās its character in the sources, حمام قدیمی شیخ follows them as the surviving bath, and تپه تبان and کولتپه اهرنجان close the sheet as the two oldest points named. Dates are missing throughout.
No builder, no measurement and no description accompanies any of the five.
What is the history of Salmās?
Salmās has no founding year on file, and the five sites named for it carry no dates either, so the sequence has to be read from what the entries are rather than from when they were made. Two of them are churches. Saint George Church (Haftvan) and Aftarkhan Church put a Christian presence in the area beyond dispute, and the first of the two carries a further place name inside its own, which is the kind of detail that survives when a community is old enough for its buildings to be identified by where they stand rather than by who built them.
The other three entries reach further back or closer to the ground. تپه تبان and کولتپه اهرنجان are the oldest points the sources attach to the city, حمام قدیمی شیخ belongs to the working town, and none of the three is given a century, a patron or a size. Administration is the recent layer. Salmās serves as capital of Salmas County and of that county's Central District together, under West Azerbaijan province and under Iran, and Persian is the language in which all of that is written down.
The name itself comes in three forms. سلماس is the official written version, Salmas the plain transliteration and Salmās the marked one, with no sign in the sources that any of the three is giving way to the others.
Where is Salmās?
Salmas County holds the city and the Central District is the part of it that is built up, all inside West Azerbaijan province and within the temperate band of the northern hemisphere. Water and relief go unnamed. تپه تبان and کولتپه اهرنجان are the only points the sources set apart from the streets, and Saint George Church (Haftvan) implies a settlement of its own nearby without the entry saying how far.
What is the climate of Salmās?
Nothing narrower than West Azerbaijan province is described in seasonal terms, and the entry for Salmās adds only the temperate band of the northern hemisphere, with no wind, no sea and no mountain range named as the agent behind a given month. Figures are absent entirely. Shelter matters here, though: Aftarkhan Church and حمام قدیمی شیخ can absorb a wet morning, while تپه تبان cannot.
How do you get to Salmās?
The sources name no airport for Salmās, no railway station and no bus operator, which leaves road travel through West Azerbaijan province and a last stage inside Salmas County as the way a visitor actually arrives. Everything converges on the Central District. Aftarkhan Church and حمام قدیمی شیخ are close enough to that centre to be reached on foot, while Saint George Church (Haftvan) and کولتپه اهرنجان are not.
