Dorsoduro grew on the firmer sand banks of the southern lagoon, which kept it drier than the marshy heart of the city. Boatyards lined its edges. Santa Maria della Salute was raised as a votive offering after a plague, and in the last century the quarter drew painters and the Gallerie dell'Accademia's students, a mix of studios and galleries that marks it still.
