What is the history of San Marco?
San Marco has been the civic and religious core of Venice since the ninth century, when the first doge's chapel rose to hold the relics of Saint Mark. The square became the Republic's stage. St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace were rebuilt over centuries into their present form, and Napoleon reshaped the square's western end when the Republic fell.
It has meant Venice ever since.
