Atago-hama lies about six kilometres west-southwest of Tenjin, between the mouths of the Muromi and the Nagara. Marina-dōri separates it from Meinohama to the south, and Momochihama sits across the Muromi to the east. Commerce was kept out on purpose.

What are the main landmarks in Atago-hama?
Marina Town Kaihin Park holds an artificial beach along the sea, with high-rise blocks behind a windbreak forest and detached houses inland along the old shoreline. Atago-hama Elementary, Meinohama Junior High and Fukuoka Girls' High School all sit inside the district. The 1995 Universiade housed its athletes here.
What is the history of Atago-hama?
Fukuoka's fifth basic plan of 1981 set out a seaside city for the twenty-first century, and the first phase of Hakata Bay reclamation ran from 1982 to April 1988. This site is the Meinohama district of that work, filled with dredged seabed sand, spoil from a bota heap near the old Sawara colliery's second shaft, and concrete from the prefectural offices pulled down at the same time. City staff chose the name Nishi-Fukuoka Marina Town by competition on 22 October 1986.
