Fukuoka rose to prominence in the Yamato period, and its distance from Kyoto, Osaka and later Edo, which became Tokyo, together with its exposure to traffic from abroad, left the city a local culture and dialect of its own. Torikai's own past is not separately recorded. The quarter belongs to that longer city story, one registered block inside the Fukuoka Prefecture capital on Kyushu.
