Nobody books a room in Fukushige and the district has never pretended otherwise: this is apartment blocks, a school catchment and a trunk road. The workable base is Meinohama, where the Fukuoka City Subway and the JR Chikuhi Line meet and run through into one another. Walk 1.5 km north to Meinohama Station.
Pick it when the reason to be out here sits on this bank of the Muromi River, an office off Meinohama Ōdōri, an early train, a bowl of ramen on the Imajuku Shindō. If the reason is sightseeing, sleep in central Fukuoka and let this be the stretch you drive along.

About Fukushige
What are the main landmarks in Fukushige?
The one structure here that the rest of the city depends on is the Muromi Intake Station, the works that lifts raw water out of the Muromi River and pipes it to the Meotoishi purification plant over in Minami-ku. Its address is Fukushige 5-chōme. The district's other pull is edible: the Imajuku Shindō stretch of Route 202 is lined end to end with ramen counters, several of which carry Fukushige in their own shop names.
What is honestly missing is a sight, no temple, no shrine, no museum is filed under this address. Even the big store that wears the name, MEGA Don Quijote Fukuoka Fukushige, sits outside the boundary in Jūrokuchō, roughly 800 m west of the town centre.
What is the history of Fukushige?
The name is a piece of Edo-period etiquette. The village on this ground was called Mitsuyuki-mura, sometimes Mitsuyukiji-mura, until it brushed against the imina, the taboo personal name, of Kuroda Mitsuyuki, third lord of the Fukuoka Domain, and was rewritten as Fukushige. Mitsuyuki ruled from 1654 to 1688.
The Kadokawa Nihon Chimei Daijiten volume for Fukuoka Prefecture, published in 1988, still gives that as the reason, so the older record is anything but silent. The built town is far younger than the name. Fields went under housing once the Route 202 bypass was graded through in the 1970s.
In 1975 the register listed 345 households and 1,270 people; the city ran its address reform here in the 1980s and drew Fukushige 1-chōme to 5-chōme in 1987. Fukuoka Municipal Fukushige Elementary School had opened in April 1979.
Where is Fukushige?
Fukushige fills the gap between the Fukuoka Expressway Circular Route on the west and the Muromi River on the east, with Sawara-ku and its Kotabe blocks on the far bank. National Route 202 crosses the town as the Imajuku Shindō. Meinohama Ōdōri climbs north out of Fukushige intersection in 1-chōme, Shimoyamato-dōri joins the outer ring road in 2-chōme, and the Fukushige Exit ramp opened in 3-chōme in 2001.
