Hotels stand in a row here. They line the station square at the Chikushi exit, which makes this the obvious side of Hakata station to sleep on. A government quarter fills the middle.
The national joint government building and the prefectural east building stand there, with a number of vocational colleges around them. Zoning is commercial throughout.

What are the main landmarks in Hakata-eki-higashi?
The joint government building gathers several agencies. The Kyushu regional development bureau, the Kyushu transport bureau, the Kyushu defence bureau and the Fukuoka regional taxation bureau all sit in it. A newspaper keeps its western office here.
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun has its western branch in the district, alongside the head offices of several Kyushu companies. Naka-Hie park is the green. It is the open ground the district has, in a quarter otherwise given over to offices and hotels.
What is the history of Hakata-eki-higashi?
This ground was paddy behind the first station. Hakata station opened in 1889 beside the old town, near what is now the Dekimachi park, and the Kagoshima main line curved sharply south after entering it. Two platforms could not cope.
Passengers and freight had already outgrown the station before the Second World War, and the crowding grew worse in the recovery. A new line cut across the fields. It shortened the curve behind the old station, and an elevated station with many platforms was built in the middle of it, opening in 1963.
Readjustment made three districts. The paddies around the new station became Hakata-eki-mae on the west and Hakata-eki-higashi and Hakata-eki-minami on the east, and offices gathered around the new station square. The names were fixed in 1969.
Where is Hakata-eki-higashi?
Hakata-eki-higashi covers about forty-three hectares in the north-west of Hakata ward in Fukuoka, bounded by the Mikasa river to the north-east, the Hyakunenbashi-dori to the south-east, the Chikushi-dori to the south-west and the Takeshita-dori to the west.
