Five hectares make the whole town. Komondomachi sits about eight hundred metres north-east of Tenjin, bounded by the Showa-dori to the south-east and Narayamachi to the north-east. Nakasu-Kawabata station is very close. It lies a few hundred metres off, which puts the town within walking distance of both Tenjin and Nakasu.
Merchant houses have held this ground since early modern times.

What are the main landmarks in Komondomachi?
Kawakami Otojiro was born in this town. The actor and impresario came from Komondomachi, and the site of his birth is one of the two things the town is noted for. Okihama Inari shrine is the other.
It stands within the five hectares of the town, which is small ground for a shrine and a birthplace both. Two festival flows claim the town. The south-west belongs to the Daikoku-nagare and the north-east to the Doi-nagare of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa, which runs from the first to the fifteenth of July as an offering at Kushida shrine.
What is the history of Komondomachi?
The name has run continuously since the Edo period. Komondomachi is one of the merchant towns of Hakata and has carried the same name from then to now, which is unusual in a city that renamed so much. Fire took the whole town in 1945.
Every part of it burned in the air raid, and the streets were rebuilt afterwards. Boundaries were redrawn in 1966. Part of Komondomachi became Shimokawabatamachi that year, and parts of Myorakuji-shinmachi, Myorakujimachi, Gyomachi and six other old towns were absorbed into it.
The old names survive in the road nicknames.
Where is Komondomachi?
Komondomachi covers about five hectares in the north-east of Hakata ward in Fukuoka, bordering Narayamachi to the north-east, Shimokawabatamachi across the Showa-dori to the south-east, Susakimachi to the south-west and Tsumashoji to the north-west.
