What are the main landmarks in Minato-kashii?

One address in Minato-kashii actually wants visitors, and it is the produce market. Fukuoka Central Vegetables and Fruits Wholesale Market, signed Vegefull Stadium, opened here in February 2016 on a site of 149,691 square metres at Minato-Kashii 3-chome, and the city built viewing corridors into the building. Fukuoka's market office says those corridors are open to anyone at any time, with no booking.

The auction begins at seven. It runs about an hour, Monday to Saturday apart from Wednesdays and holidays, and a second window looks onto the pesticide-residue laboratory at nine. Upstairs the Produce Market Hall keeps shops and counters that feed market workers their breakfast, and the first two hours of parking cost nothing.

The other structure worth naming is shut to the public. The Island City Container Terminal takes 48.4 hectares of the southern waterfront, facing the older Kashii Park Port berths across the channel, with 890 metres of quay over three berths and six over-panamax gantry cranes rated at 40.6 tonnes, the heaviest box handling at the Port of Hakata. Its operator gives the gate address as Minato-Kashii 1-chome 1-3.

Island City Central Park is often listed as the island's attraction, but it stands 1.4 km east inside Kashii-teriha and not in this district.

What is the history of Minato-kashii?

Nothing here predates the dredger. Fukuoka revised its port plan in 1989 to raise an island rather than fill the tidal flat outright; the reclamation licence followed in April 1994 and cutting began that July, with the national government, the city and the third-sector company Hakata Port Development dividing the bill and the finished island measuring 401.3 hectares. Quays came before addresses: the C1 container berth entered service in September 2003 and C2 in October 2008, both on land that carried no name yet.

That name arrived around 2009, when 1-chōme through 3-chōme were laid out on the fill. Fukuoka reported in August 2022 that the island's land had sold out and the scheme had closed in surplus. Even the boundaries kept moving, on 26 June 2023 part of 3-chōme was absorbed into 1-chōme and what remained was constituted as Minato-Kashii 4-chome.

Where is Minato-kashii?

Minato-kashii is not a district you wander into. It occupies the western lobe of Fukuoka Island City, water on three sides, and its eastern edge is a road rather than a street corner: Island City Port Road No. 1 runs north to south across the island and separates the 209.5-hectare port-building area from the 191.8-hectare town-building area beyond it. On the far side stands Kashii-teriha, 1.4 km east, where the island's apartment towers, schools and hospitals were built.

To the south, 1.6 km off, Kashii Island Bridge carries traffic over to Kashii-hama Futō and the older Kashii Park Port quays. To the north the Uminonakamichi Bridge reaches 1.1 km across open water to the Uminonakamichi sandbar. Central Fukuoka lies 8.2 km south.
