What are the main landmarks in Sakurazaka?

Sakuragamine shrine gave the quarter its name. It stands in the second chome, on the slope the name records, with Shinko-ji and a Tenmangu beside it. A retainer's house still stands.

The residence of Kato Shisho, who was active at the end of the shogunate, survives quietly in the same chome. Hanamizuki-dori is the busy line. The street between the first and second chome is known as the short cut from Keyaki-dori to the Jonan line, and shops and restaurants stand along it.

What is the history of Sakurazaka?

The quarter used to be called Shimo-Kego. That was its name before the address reforms, and the ground was largely the house plots of senior samurai, because Fukuoka castle stands close by. A shrine on the slope renamed it.

Sakuragamine shrine in the second chome is what Sakurazaka is called after, and the slope itself is the other half of the name. The reforms came in two rounds. The present names were fixed by the address changes of 1967 and 1971, which produced the three chome the quarter now has.

Scenic protection covers most of it. A scenic district takes in a wide stretch of all three chome, with special green conservation districts on the green ground in the north-west of the second and the north-east of the third.

Where is Sakurazaka?

Sakurazaka covers about thirty-four hectares in Chuo ward in Fukuoka, bordering Akasaka and Kego to the north, Furukogarasumachi to the east, Goshogadani and Minami park to the south and Tani and Ropponmatsu to the west.
