Shimo-yamato is residential almost throughout, and its own station on the JR Chikuhi Line puts central Fukuoka within a short ride. The Shimo-yamato-dōri carries the traffic. Along the Jūrō River and the Nagara River the city has designated green corridors for walking, which are the pleasant part of a district otherwise made of houses and narrow streets.

What are the main landmarks in Shimo-yamato?
The largest thing here is a railway depot. The subway's rolling-stock yard occupies the north-western corner of the district, and beyond it the ground is housing. Shimo-yamato Station sits on the northern side on the Chikuhi Line, the Fukuoka Expressway loop crosses the district, and the Jūrō River with the Nagara River gives it the only open space it has.
What is the history of Shimo-yamato?
The name comes from Yamato-no-shō, a manor in Sawara district of Chikuzen province recorded between the Nanboku-chō and Sengoku periods and sometimes written with different characters. It was already split in two by 1441. In the sixth month of that year Sō Sadamori granted the deputy offices of both the upper and lower parts of the manor, together with a hundred and fifty chō of land inside it, which is why an upper Yamato still adjoins the lower one.
The present town boundaries date from 1986.
Where is Shimo-yamato?
Shimo-yamato lies in the eastern part of Nishi-ku, on the western Fukuoka plain, spanning both banks of the Jūrō River and the left bank of the Nagara. Iki-no-Matsubara and Odo lie north, Uchihama east, Ishimaru south. Kami-yamato is west, the upper half of the old manor, with the Shirononaru and Shimo-yamato housing estates beside it.
