Where visitors usually base themselves, and why.
Two roads carry the commerce. The Taihaku-dori on the west and the Nanotsu-dori on the north are lined with shops and offices, and the rest of the district is quiet housing. The Mikasa river runs along one side.
Its bank is treated in the city plan as a green walking axis, which is the open ground the district has. Gofukumachi station is a short walk.

What are the main landmarks in Taihakumachi?
Street nicknames are the record here. The Nagarekanjo-dori, the Tatecho-suji, the Ohama-kahan-dori and the Ohama-dori all carry names drawn from the history of the ground or from local character. Narrow lanes mark the north-east.
That corner was left out of the post-war reconstruction land readjustment, so it keeps an older street pattern with many lanes under four metres wide. Eight and a half hectares make up the district. The Taihaku-dori closes it on the south-west and the Mikasa river on the north-east.
What is the history of Taihakumachi?
A pleasure quarter stood here once. It was called Yanagimachi, after the Yanagimachi in the Madenokoji of Kyoto, and it later moved to the Kiyokawa district south of the Watanabe-dori. Reconstruction skipped one corner.
The north-east of Taihakumachi fell outside the land readjustment carried out under the post-war reconstruction plan, which is why its streets are older and narrower than the rest. The district is a modern name on old ground. It sits at the south-eastern outer edge of the waterfront area the city treats as one of the three cores of its centre, between the Taihaku-dori and the Mikasa river.
Nothing else of the old quarter survives.
Where is Taihakumachi?
Taihakumachi covers about eight and a half hectares in the north-west of Hakata ward in Fukuoka, bordering Sekijomachi to the north-west, Chiyo across the Mikasa river to the north-east, Shimogofukumachi to the south-east and Kamiyamachi across the Taihaku-dori.
