Where visitors usually base themselves, and why.
Detached houses fill most of the ground. Wakamiya covers about eighty-seven hectares of hill developed for housing, with blocks of flats along the main roads and a shopping street on the Chihaya to Doi line. Four stations are within reach.
Chihaya and Najima lie north, Maimatsubara and Doi west, all of them a kilometre or two off. The Hakata bypass runs along the western side.

What are the main landmarks in Wakamiya?
No listed monument stands in Wakamiya. The district was made out of hillside for housing, and what the record gives it instead is protected ground. A scenic district covers part of the third chome.
The Matsuzaki district limits building, land forming and tree felling there, in order to keep the look of the city. A special green conservation area sits beside it. The Matsuzaki conservation district restricts building on the green ground, which is the closest thing to a set piece the quarter has.
What is the history of Wakamiya?
Wakamiya is a made district rather than an old village. Its ground is hillside on the right bank of the Tatara river, developed for housing, which is why the record holds planning documents rather than a founding date. The shopping street follows an old road.
The Chihaya to Doi line is the long-standing main road through this part of Higashi ward, and shops gathered along it as the housing went up. Planning treats it in two halves. The north of the fifth chome counts as a medium and high-rise housing zone, because of the large estates there, and the rest is a low-rise housing zone of detached houses.
A bypass closed the western edge. The Hakata bypass of national route 3 runs down that side, and the prefectural roads to Naokata and to Machikawara cross the district.

Wakamiya covers about eighty-seven hectares in the south of Higashi ward in Fukuoka on the right bank of the Tatara river, bordering Mizutani, Maimatsubara and Hatta to the north-east, Tatara to the south and Matsuzaki to the west.
