Two stations sit side by side. Musashi-Mizonokuchi on the JR Nambu Line and Mizonokuchi on the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line are the pair the district grew around, and the streets in front of them carry the facilities that make this the core of northern Kawasaki. Spelling varies with the era.
Railway signs read Musashi-Mizonokuchi and Mizonokuchi, but until the early Shōwa period the place name was written Mizoguchi or Mizonokuchi in the older forms. This is a working town centre.

What are the main landmarks in Mizonokuchi?
One river was moved out of the district. The Hirasegawa gathered the water the Tama hills held and ran toward Mizonokuchi before its course was diverted, and it flows toward Kuji now. A wooded hill went the same way.
Southwest of Musashi-Mizonokuchi station the ground was called Kumotoyama and carried rich woodland, where apartment blocks stand instead. A stone marker records a lost bridge. The Sakaebashi crossing, where the Ōyama Kaidō meets the Nambu line road near the boundary with Shimosakunobe, once had a bridge over the Hirasegawa, and a stone beside the junction is all that says so.
What is the history of Mizonokuchi?
The name describes the landform. A narrow stream like a ditch came down from the Tama hills and showed itself here, making this the mouth of that ditch, which is what Mizonokuchi means. Its position explains the rest.
This was ground opened early along a highway and it was the entrance to the Tama hills, where natural forest once spread, and the name records both facts at once. The old province was Musashi. Under the ritsuryō system the area including Mizonokuchi belonged to Tachibana district in Musashi province, which is where the Musashi in the station name comes from.
Development erased most of what came before. Once the Hirasegawa was diverted urban building went ahead fast, so tracing anything from before the modern period is difficult, and the Sakaebashi stone is one of the few markers left.
Where is Mizonokuchi?
Mizonokuchi lies in Takatsu-ku in the north of Kawasaki, at the point where a stream from the Tama hills reached the lowland, next to Shimosakunobe and within reach of the Tama river.
