What is the history of Itoman?
Itoman lived by the sea for centuries. Its fishermen were famous across the Ryukyu islands, sailing far in wooden boats to fish the reefs and the open ocean, and the town grew rich on the trade of the sea. Then war came to the south.
In the spring of 1945 the great Battle of Okinawa swept down the island, and the last stand was fought here in the far south, where the fields and caves ran with blood. The end of the fighting fell on this ground. On Mabuni hill the last defenders held out, and thousands of soldiers and civilians died in the cliffs and caves, among them the schoolgirl nurses of the Himeyuri corps.
The land was made a place of peace. After the war the hills were laid out as a memorial park, with a great wall carved with the names of all the dead, and a museum to teach the horror of war. The reefs still draw the fishers.

Itoman lies at the southern tip of Okinawa Island in southern Japan. The town sits on a low coast of coral and cane fields, where the land runs out to cliffs above the sea, on the East China Sea south of Naha. Sugar fields cover the flat land.
