What is the history of Rmeil?
Rmeil grew on the hills east of old Beirut. The name is Levantine. As the merchant families of Beirut built villas on the slope through the nineteenth century, the Sursock House and its neighbours turned Rmeil into a quarter of gardens and grand stairs, later joined by the museums that now define it.
The fighting left its scars on Rmeil. Beit Beirut, a shell-scarred mansion on the front line, keeps that harder chapter of the district in plain view.
