About Tangier

Two seas wash the same city.

What is Tangier known for?

Tangier holds coastline on the Mediterranean Sea and on the Atlantic Ocean, and its closeness to Spain has long made it an entry point into Morocco and into Africa beyond. The port carries that traffic. Museums account for much of the rest: the Kasbah Museum, the Forbes Museum of Tangier, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tangier, and Fondation Lorin among them.

Ibn Batutta is buried here too.

What are the main landmarks in Tangier?

Museum-going takes up most of a visit. The Kasbah Museum, the Forbes Museum of Tangier, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tangier, the Musée de Carmen-Macein and Fondation Lorin cover most of what a visitor comes to see indoors. Churches add a second layer: the Church of Saint Andrew, the Church of the Immaculate Conception and the French Church of Tangier.

The Tomb of Ibn Batutta draws its own callers. The Tangier bullring completes the set.

What is the history of Tangier?

The port explains most of it. Tangier's closeness to Spain has long made it an entry point into Morocco and into Africa beyond, which is the plainest explanation for a harbour of its standing. Foreign names sit on its buildings.

The Church of Saint Andrew, the Church of the Immaculate Conception and the French Church of Tangier all carry names from outside the country, and the Forbes Museum of Tangier does the same. Those names are the record's own evidence of an outward-facing past. Administration is the clearer thread.

Tangier is the capital of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region and also of the Tangier-Assilah Prefecture, which places the city at the head of two separate tiers of Moroccan government. Memory has its own address here. The Tomb of Ibn Batutta stands in the city, and the Kasbah Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tangier, the Musée de Carmen-Macein and Fondation Lorin carry the rest of what the city has chosen to keep.

Two seas frame all of it. The Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean both reach the same shoreline, and every other fact about the place follows from that one.

Where is Tangier?

Water defines the outline. Tangier holds shoreline on both the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, a double frontage that also sets the city close to Spain across the water. Africa begins here for many arrivals.

The Tangier-Assilah Prefecture draws the local boundary, and the wider Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region runs out from the city into the rest of Morocco.

What is the climate of Tangier?

Two seas do the moderating. The Atlantic Ocean pushes in from the west and the Mediterranean Sea works the other flank, so Tangier stays under maritime influence rather than taking the swings that inland ground can take. Tangier sits in the temperate band.

Between those two coasts and that band, the city's weather belongs to the sea more than to the rest of Morocco.

How do you get to Tangier?

The sea route is the famous one. Crossings from Spain land at Tangier's port, which is why the city works as an entry point into Morocco and, for many travellers, into Africa on the same journey. Overland, the city sits at the head of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region.

The Tangier-Assilah Prefecture covers the immediate approaches. Spain is the nearest neighbour across the water.
