Staying in Amsterdam-Oost trades the crowds of the canal belt for calmer, largely residential streets a short tram ride from the centre. The area around the Oosterpark puts you within walking distance of the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam and the Natura Artis Magistra zoo, which suits sightseeing without the crush of the old town. The harbour side, around the Eastern Docklands and IJburg, is quieter still, with modern apartments and waterfront rather than nightlife.
Beds are fewer here. Visitors who want to be steps from the main museums and bars may prefer to pair a night here with a base closer to central Amsterdam.

What are the main landmarks in Amsterdam-Oost?
On the borough's western edge, along the Plantage, the Natura Artis Magistra zoo sits beside the glasshouses of the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam. Inside the zoo, Micropia magnifies microbes. The same quarter holds the memory museums: the Dutch Resistance Museum, the Hollandsche Schouwburg, and the National Holocaust Museum.
Beside the Oosterpark, the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam gathers ethnographic collections in a grand old hall, while Het Scheepvaartmuseum, the NEMO Science Center, and the Oosterkerk mark the harbour and the old Eastern Islands to the north.
What is the history of Amsterdam-Oost?
In its present form the borough dates from May 2010, when Amsterdam joined two older districts, Zeeburg and Oost-Watergraafsmeer, into a single stadsdeel called Amsterdam-Oost. Each half once ran its own affairs. The Zeeburg side gathered the eastern harbour islands reaching toward the IJ, while Oost-Watergraafsmeer covered the inland quarters around the Oosterpark.
Newer building on the Eastern Docklands and the islands of IJburg reshaped the waterfront into something plainly modern. One name now covers several older places.
Where is Amsterdam-Oost?
The borough forms Amsterdam's eastern flank, bounded by the Amstel River on the west and the open water of the IJ to the north and east. Its inland core wraps around the Oosterpark and the old Watergraafsmeer polder, while the reclaimed Eastern Docklands and IJburg reach out into the harbour. Across the Amstel lie the canal belt and the old city centre.
