Bierkade and the Italiaanse Zeedijk line the water Hoorn was built to work, and the streets behind them hold the oldest fronts in the city. Grote Oost is for the house fronts. Breed runs into the same quarter. Foreestenhuis and Sint Jozefhuis stand among these streets, and the Koepelkerk, the Noorderkerk and the Lutherse Kerk fall within the same walk. Blokker and Zwaag are the quiet option.
Both villages belong to the municipality without belonging to the old centre, so beds are fewer out there, which suits you if the Steamtrain Hoorn Medemblik and a slower day are the point. Tramstation Hoorn anchors the other end of that interest, and Museum van de 20ste Eeuw fills an afternoon for anyone who has already walked the harbour.

Alkmaar lies 20 kilometres away and Amsterdam 35, so Hoorn is within reach of both without being attached to either, and the Roode Steen is where arrivals tend to end up.
