Koemarkt is the address to want. The square carries the cattle market in its name, and the listed houses standing on it put a traveller in the oldest part of Purmerend without any walking to speak of. Bierkade runs off it.
Weerwal and Venediën add more of the same fronts, and the Purmerends Museum is the place that explains what is being looked at. Villa Clementine marks the other side. That house and the Lutherse Kerk stand off the market square, in streets that stay quieter, and a room there suits you if the point of the trip is the building stock rather than the shops.
Saint Nicholas holds the older parish. Purmersteenweg and Wagenbeurs are named on the same register, so the whole of this centre reads as one protected fabric. Beds thin out past the ring.
Kwadijk keeps its Hervormde kerk and Wijdewormer its Ringdijk address, but both sit on polder ground with little in the way of lodging, so the town takes the visitors. Amsterdam is the fallback. Bierkade, Weerwal, Venediën and Purmersteenweg all keep listed houses, one of them recorded only as Huis met lijstgevel, and together they are what the old market town left standing.
Faith kept its own buildings. Saint Nicholas and the Lutherse Kerk served the town while the Hervormde kerk at Kwadijk served the polder outside it. Growth came late and fast.
Purmerend stayed a modest market town for a long stretch, then filled out as a commuter town of the Randstad, with work and school in Amsterdam pulling people across the polder every morning.
