About Vlaardingen
Fishing shaped the town.
What is Vlaardingen known for?
Visserij & Vlaardings Museum keeps that record, and the Grote Kerk stands over the old centre. The water does the rest. Vlaardingen faces the Nieuwe Maas at the point where the Oude Maas comes in, so shipping passes at close quarters through the day, and the port operation around Rotterdam accounts for most of what goes by.
What are the main landmarks in Vlaardingen?
The Grote Kerk holds the centre. Visserij & Vlaardings Museum is the other fixed point, and between them they account for the church tower and the fishing trade that gave the town whatever standing it had. Neighbouring Schiedam adds more.
De Walvisch and De Palmboom, the Nationaal Jenevermuseum Schiedam and the Grote of St. Janskerk all sit close enough to fold into a day out from here.
What is the history of Vlaardingen?
Everything here began with the water. A settlement on the bank of the Nieuwe Maas, at the point where the Oude Maas joins it, had the sea and the inland waterways available from the same quay, and that access is the whole basis of the town. Fishing followed from it.
Boats worked out of Vlaardingen for long enough that the trade became the subject of a museum, Visserij & Vlaardings Museum, rather than the reason the harbour is busy. The church marks the old core. Grote Kerk stands where the pre-industrial town was laid out, and the streets around it keep a plan that predates everything the port later brought.
Rotterdam changed the terms. Vlaardingen ended up inside Rijnmond, the metropolitan area that grew around the port, and the scale of that operation put the town's own harbour work into a different category altogether. Schiedam sits alongside it.
The two municipalities run into one another along the same bank, which is why the jenever mills of Schiedam and the fishery collection of Vlaardingen turn up on the same day's itinerary. Little open ground was left over. The municipality administers a small area of South Holland, most of it land rather than water, so the edge of town arrives quickly in any direction taken from the Grote Kerk.
Where is Vlaardingen?
Two rivers meet at the town. Vlaardingen occupies the bank of the Nieuwe Maas at its confluence with the Oude Maas, which is what brings deep-water shipping past the quays instead of somewhere out of sight. Vlaardingen sits on level ground.
Its municipality covers a small area, mostly land with the remainder water, and the built-up streets reach the boundary with Schiedam without much of a break in between.
What is the climate of Vlaardingen?
The weather stays mild. Vlaardingen lies in the temperate band, so the year runs without extremes, and the open water of the Nieuwe Maas keeps frost and heat alike from settling in for long. Rain is frequent and light.
Wind comes off the river with nothing to break it, which matters far more on the quays than in the streets behind the Grote Kerk.
How do you get to Vlaardingen?
Most arrivals come via Rotterdam. Vlaardingen sits inside Rijnmond, so the local rail and road links that serve the metropolitan area do the work, and no long-distance route stops here on its own account. Schiedam is the next town along.
River traffic on the Nieuwe Maas is a constant presence without being a way in, which leaves a train, a bus or a short drive as the practical choices from anywhere in the area.
