It stands on an island where great rivers meet, long a crossroads of Dutch inland shipping, and its old harbours and merchant houses cluster around the tall Grote Kerk. The first free Dutch assembly met here against Spain. Water and history made the town.

What is the history of Dordrecht?
Dordrecht was the first great city of Holland. Granted its charter in 1220, it grew rich on the river trade, holding the right to tax every boat that passed, and for centuries it was the leading town of the province. Rebellion was born in its halls.
In 1572 the free states of Holland gathered here to defy Spanish rule, the first bold step toward the birth of the Dutch nation. Faith and trade filled the old town. The great church rose over the harbours, and in 1618 a famous synod met in the city to settle the quarrels of the Dutch Church and order a new Bible in the common tongue.
The rivers slowly took their toll. A great flood and the rise of nearby ports drew the trade away, but Dordrecht kept its old harbours, its merchant houses, and its leaning church tower almost whole. The Grote Kerk still looms over the water.

Dordrecht sits on an island of the great river delta. The town lies where the rivers of the Rhine and Maas meet the sea channels in the south of Holland, ringed by water on every side. Broad rivers carry the shipping past the quays.
