Where to stay in Mian Channun
Where the beds are, and what that means for the visit.
The Grand Trunk Road decides most of it. Mian Channun grew north and along that road between 1972 and 1984, so the newer rooms, the workshops, and the coach stops sit on the highway frontage rather than in the old lanes. Faisal Town is the calmer side.
Laid out as a residential quarter, it keeps its distance from the horns of the N-5 and suits anyone wanting sleep before an early start toward Multan. Pilgrims choose differently. The shrine of Baba Mian Channu, the Sufi whose name the town carries, stands in the older core beside the grain market and the fruit market that the plan of 1918 set out.
Beds near that quarter put the public library, the park, and the Khushi Barfi shops within walking reach. Trains help too. Every express on the Karachi to Peshawar main line calls at Mian Channu Railway Station, so a room within a rickshaw ride of the platform saves an hour at each end of a journey.
Khanewal lies about 45 kilometres off and Lahore about 250 kilometres to the northeast, which makes Mian Channun a plausible overnight break rather than a base for a week. Business at the tehsil offices argues for the middle; a long drive argues for the road.

About Mian Channun
What is Mian Channun known for?
Cotton, wheat, and mangoes move out of Mian Channun by rail and road. Khushi Barfi, a milk sweet with the density of fudge, is what the town sells to travellers who stop for nothing else, and it carries the town's own name. Some names travel further.
Arshad Nadeem threw for Olympic gold from here, Maulana Tariq Jameel preaches out of the same tehsil, and Ghulam Haider Wyne rose from it to lead the Punjab government. The town also counts Humza Yousaf, a former First Minister of Scotland, among its own.
What are the main landmarks in Mian Channun?
The shrine of Baba Mian Channu is the reason for the name. The Sufi saint lived in this stretch of country and was buried here, and his mazar still pulls visitors into the older streets. A colonial plan added the rest.
Under the layout drawn in 1918, the grain market, the fruit market, the public library, the park, the mosque, the church, and the gurdwara all went up at public cost, and Government College later became the town's best-known institution.
What is the history of Mian Channun?
The Umayyads brought this stretch of the Punjab into the Islamic world in the eighth century, and the country around Mian Channun answered to the wider Multan region from then on. A saint gave it the name. Baba Mian Channu lived and was buried in the area, and the town that grew at his grave kept his name through a colonial attempt to change it, when signs painted with the new title were repainted overnight by an unknown hand until the administration gave up.
The plan came in 1918. A British officer set the streets to a drawing, with the grain market, the fruit market, the public library, and the park built at public cost, and a notified area followed in 1919. A town committee came in 1938, a municipal committee in 1975.
Mian Channun was slow to grow between 1947 and 1961, and the real expansion ran from 1972 to 1984, northward and along the G.T Road. Then the map changed. Khanewal District was carved out on 1 July 1985, and Mian Channun, part of Multan District for more than a century, became the headquarters of its own tehsil with three Union councils under it.
Khushwant Singh spent his childhood in the town. A stray BrahMos missile fired from India came down here in the 2022 India-Pakistan missile incident.
Where is Mian Channun?
Flat cropland runs in every direction from Mian Channun. The town stands on the Grand Trunk Road in the Multan region of Punjab, about 250 kilometres southwest of Lahore and some 45 kilometres from Khanewal, with no high ground and no coast anywhere near. Cotton and wheat hold the fields.
Mangoes come off the same land, and the Khanewal District country around the town is worked rather than wild.
What is the climate of Mian Channun?
The crop calendar keeps the year in Mian Channun. Rabi sowing takes the cool months, and wheat, grain, peas, and barley come off the fields before the heat builds over the inland Punjab plain. Kharif belongs to the hot half.
Cotton, sugarcane, jawar, bajra, and oil seeds are worked through the subtropical summer, the season that decides what leaves Khanewal District by rail.
How do you get to Mian Channun?
The N-5 runs straight through the middle of town. That is the Grand Trunk Road, and it ties Mian Channun to Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, and Karachi without a change of vehicle. Trains stop here as well.
Mian Channu Railway Station sits on the Karachi to Peshawar main line where every express service calls, and the KLP line takes the town's cotton and grain out to the ports and the mills.
