The Grand Trunk Road came first. Long before any municipal record, the route between Lahore and the north crossed the Chenab River near here, and a settlement on a crossing of that kind takes its shape from traffic rather than from any single founder. Wazirabad's date on paper is 1867.
That year fixed the town in the administrative record, and what had been a river-and-road stop became a place with boundaries, offices, and an obligation to keep its own accounts. Cutlery followed the road. Steel work took hold well enough that the town answers to the city of cutlery across Punjab, a name earned in workshops rather than granted by any charter, and it has outlasted every change in what the district around it grows or ships.
Administration settled here too. Wazirabad became the seat of Wazirabad District and of Wazirabad Tehsil, which put the courts and the record offices on the same streets as the grinding shops. Lahore lies about 100 kilometres down the road.
Gujranwala, Gujrat, and Sialkot each sit within an easy run, close enough that the four towns have traded goods and labour for as long as the road has been open.
