What are the main landmarks in Admot Yishai?
Mitzpe Hebron is the one thing in Admot Yishai a visitor can walk into, a viewing deck built in 2014 on the roof of Beit Menachem at the summit of Tel Rumeida. Hebron lies open below it. The ruins of Deir Al Arba'een crown the same hilltop, holding the tombs venerated as those of Jesse and Ruth, and the neighbourhood takes its name, Jesse's Lands, from that shrine.
Uphill of the houses the Israel Antiquities Authority renewed its excavations in 2014, cutting between Palestinian homes with an archaeological park in view. The Cavern of the Patriarchs stands about 700 metres east.
What is the history of Admot Yishai?
Admot Yishai rests on ground secured for Hebron's Jews in 1811, when the Sephardi rabbi Haim Yeshua, called Haim the Egyptian, took 800 dunams of Tel Rumeida for the community. Jewish Hebron emptied after 1929. The cheesemaker Yaakov Ezra moved back onto the tell in 1930, stayed on alone when the British expelled the rest in 1936, and left only in 1947.
Caravans returned to the hilltop in 1984 under the name Admot Yishai, Jesse's Lands. Rabbi Eliyahu Shlomo Ra'anan was murdered in his home here in 1998, and a kollel opened in the room where he was killed.
