What is the history of Old City of Hebron?
Archaeologists place the earliest Hebron away from these lanes, at Tel Rumeida, roughly two hundred metres west, and read that hill as a Canaanite town rather than the quarter standing here. Greek or Roman settlers came later. Under the Abbasid Caliphate the quarter took over as the centre of the whole Hebron site, and it has anchored the city ever since.
