Avraham Avinu is a residential quarter of flats, a synagogue and the offices of the Jewish community of Hebron, not a hotel district. The Palestine Hotel takes no guests. That heritage building stands about 250 metres north-west at the old municipality square, and while guest houses operate inside the Old City of Hebron, the hotels sit further out in the northern upper city along the Jerusalem Road.
The way in passes an Israeli army checkpoint, because the 1997 Hebron Protocol left this quarter inside the H2 sector under Israeli military control.

The Abraham Avinu Synagogue is the landmark of Avraham Avinu, a 16th-century building in use for prayer again since its rebuilding in 1977. Al Qazazeen Street runs thirty metres north. The Cavern of the Patriarchs, al-Haram al-Ibrahimi in Arabic, stands about 300 metres east, and Al-Sultan Pool lies some 150 metres south-east.
The Hebron Museum, Beit Shne'orson, Karantina and the Shajar Al-Durr oil mill carry Old City of Hebron addresses rather than this one, and that whole quarter entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017.
What is the history of Avraham Avinu?
Avraham Avinu takes its name from the synagogue that Jews expelled from Spain raised at the centre of Hebron's Jewish quarter in the 16th century, under Rabbi Malkiel Ashkenazi. The 1929 Hebron massacre ended that community. The survivors were evacuated to Jerusalem, and after 1948 Jordanian rule razed the quarter's houses, laid a wholesale vegetable market over them and left the synagogue ruins as a goat pen.
Israel took the site back in 1976 and the synagogue was restored in 1977. The United Nations Security Council holds that Israeli settlements in occupied territory have no legal validity, a reading Israel rejects.
