The ground here is among the oldest in Belgrade. On the ridge above sat Singidunum, the Roman fort whose walls became the Kalemegdan fortress over long centuries of siege and rebuilding. Dositej's Lyceum gave the quarter its name.
Around it the old town grew, its schooling and learning remembered in the Museum of Vuk and Dositej, while the Ružica Church and the Sveta Petka chapel kept the fortress side sacred as the district settled into its present shape.
