The fortress dominates. Kalemegdan crowns the ridge where Stari Grad meets the confluence, and within its walls stand the Pobednik monument, the Despot Stefan Tower, the small Ružica Church, and the chapel of Sveta Petka, with the Tomb of national heroes on Kalemegdan and the Monument of Gratitude to France set among the ramparts and the shaded promenades. Below the fortress the museums line up.
The National Museum of Serbia holds the city's principal art and archaeology collection, while the Nikola Tesla Museum keeps the inventor's papers and instruments a few streets away. The Ethnographic Museum, the Belgrade City Museum, the Museum of Applied Arts, and the Yugoslav Film Archive fill out a dense museum quarter, and Manak's House adds a smaller house-museum to the walk. Together they make Stari Grad the museum heart of Belgrade.

The story starts on the ridge. Long before Belgrade took its name, the Romans held a fort here called Singidunum, and that stronghold above the confluence grew into the Kalemegdan fortress that still marks Stari Grad. The old town spread from the fortress gates, and the ramparts, chapels, and the Despot Stefan Tower carry the layers of that long defence.
