Most travellers pass straight through. The road from Saint Petersburg towards Narva runs through Kingisepp, and the town gets treated as a stop for fuel rather than a night, which is a fair reason to have the streets to yourself if you do stay. Saint Catherine Cathedral marks the middle.
Rooms near it put the Summer Garden, the former town hall and the bank building inside a short walk, and the civil quarter can be worked through in an afternoon. Romanovka keeps a former almshouse of its own. The garrison quarter is the other half.
Quarters built for the 146th Tsaritsynsky Infantry Regiment stand there with the officers' corps, the cantonist corps and the riding hall, and a bed on that side puts the strangest architecture in Kingisepp outside the door. The Luga River offers a third view. Its bank stays clear of the through road, so a window facing the water gives a quieter night than one facing the traffic bound for Narva.
Stay in Kingisepp if you are crossing towards Estonia and want more than fuel, or if the garrison buildings and Saint Lazarus church are reason enough to break the drive.

What is the history of Kingisepp?
The town dates from 1384. It has answered to several names since, Yam and Yama first, then Yamburg, and the one it carries replaced them without driving the older forms out of the record. The Luga gave it a reason.
A river crossing 20 kilometres east of Narva and 40 kilometres south of the Gulf of Finland was a position worth holding, and the building that followed shows how seriously it was held. Regiments moved in. The 146th Tsaritsynsky Infantry Regiment left the largest mark, and its quarters stand with an officers' corps, a cantonist corps, a grenadier school and an exercise hall raised so that drill could go on under a roof.
Trade filled the streets between. Saint Catherine Cathedral served the town, Saint Lazarus church and the Church of the Theotokos Joy of All Who Sorrow served the rest, and a commerce school, a bank building, a revenue house and a post office record the ordinary business of a district centre. Merchants left their houses.
The Vasiliev house and the Yakovlev house survive under their owners' names, the former prison and the former bath building under their uses, and a former almshouse stands at Romanovka. Novopyatnitskoye holds the Rotkirkh and Lelong estate. Kingiseppsky District is administered from the town, and the Summer Garden remains its one laid-out public green.

The Luga River runs through. Kingisepp covers about 29 square kilometres of Leningrad Oblast, Russia, 138 kilometres southwest of Saint Petersburg, 20 kilometres east of Narva and 40 kilometres south of the Gulf of Finland. Estonia begins a short way over.
Kingiseppsky District spreads around the town, with the Luga the one large feature crossing it.
What is the climate of Kingisepp?
The Gulf of Finland softens the winters. Kingisepp lies 40 kilometres from that water, near enough to be damp and grey rather than hard in the inland way, and the Luga River holds its ice well into the spring. The Summer Garden earns its name in July.
Between the thaw and the first frost the garrison quarter and the Luga bank are pleasant to walk, and the rest of the year belongs to Saint Catherine Cathedral and the shelter of the streets around it.
How do you get to Kingisepp?
The Narva road does most of it. Kingisepp sits on the route from Saint Petersburg towards Narva, 138 kilometres out from the first and 20 kilometres from the second, which is why so much traffic passes without stopping. The border with Estonia is close.
Anyone crossing there can break the drive at Saint Catherine Cathedral or the Summer Garden and still reach the Gulf of Finland, 40 kilometres off, the same day.
