The Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov House Museum keeps the composer's family home as a museum, and it is the second thing anyone visiting the town is sent to see.

What is the history of Tikhvin?
Tikhvin dates from 1383. Two religious houses account for most of what survives from before the modern town: the Tikhvin Assumption Monastery, with its belfry and its gate church, and the Monastery of Presentation of Mary. Parish churches fill in around them.
All Saints church and the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos stand among them, alongside merchant dwellings and one house that keeps its shopfront. Water and rail changed the scale. The Tikhvin Lock survives from the working waterway that once ran along the Tikhvinka River, and the Tikhvin railway station belongs to the transport era that followed it.
The Saint Petersburg Hotel survives from the commercial town that grew up between the monastery and the station. December 1941 left the deepest mark. A stela in the town commemorates the Soviet soldiers who took Tikhvin back that month, and a separate Monument to City of Military Glory records the honorary title the town was later given.
Rebuilding followed. The monastery walls and the older churches came through, which is why the historic core of Tikhvin still reads clearly against the blocks built around it.

The Tikhvinka River splits the town in two. Both banks are built on, and the crossings between them do more to organise the street plan of Tikhvin than any other feature of the site. Tikhvinsky District spreads around it, and the town serves as its administrative centre and transport hub.
