Its arch, its amphitheatre and the Andersengrad Snow White Cafe are all within a short walk. The Leningrad nuclear power plant side of town is not where visitors stay. Shops, including the Three Brothers rows, sit in the same few streets, which makes the centre the practical base for anyone without a car.
Kalishche, on the western side, is the alternative. It sits nearer the Koporye Bay shore and the road running on along the coast, which suits an early start or a trip built around the water rather than the town. Saint Petersburg remains the fallback.
Anyone wanting real choice of hotel, or arriving late from abroad, does better basing in the city and treating Sosnovyy Bor as a day out west along the Gulf of Finland. Road and rail from Saint Petersburg make that a workable single day.

What is the history of Sosnovyy Bor?
People worked this shore long before there was a town. Two catalogued camp sites at Kalishche, recorded as Kalishchenskoye-1 and Kalishchenskoye-2, hold surface finds from early settlement on the low ground behind Koporye Bay, and they are the oldest thing the municipality can point to. Kalishche outlasted them as a name.
The Kalishche pumping station carries it into the built town. Sosnovyy Bor dates from 1958. Its growth belongs to the decades after that, when the Leningrad nuclear power plant rose on the coast and the settlement was enlarged around the workforce that ran it.
Lomonosovsky District had held this ground before. It was left surrounding the new municipality rather than containing it, and that arrangement still describes the map of this corner of Leningrad Oblast. Andersengrad belongs to the later town.
Its entrance arch and tin-soldier tower, its amphitheatre, its cascade pool and its brick houses were laid out together as one composition, and the bas-relief of Hans Christian Andersen inside gives the whole ensemble its name. The Andersengrad Mermaid and the Andersengrad Snow White Cafe are part of the same build. Little standing fabric here predates the twentieth century.
Where is Sosnovyy Bor?
Koporye Bay gives the town its water. The bay is an inlet of the Gulf of Finland, and the built-up area of Sosnovyy Bor stands back from its shoreline on low, level ground. Lomonosovsky District surrounds the municipality on every landward side, so the boundary is tight and open country starts quickly.
Saint Petersburg lies east. Beyond it the flat, wooded ground of Leningrad Oblast carries on inland.
What is the climate of Sosnovyy Bor?
