What are the main landmarks in Kirovsky District?
Saint Nikita Church, built from 1782 to 1795 for Nikita Beketov's patron saint, is the oldest surviving 18th-century Russian building in Volgograd. The city's first Pushkin monument stands by the abandoned Kirov Palace of Culture. Facing the Church of St. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa is a monument to General Shumilov and his 64th Army, and the district also has the Musical Instrument Museum and a monument to the Civil War hero Nikolai Rudnev on Kirov Street.
What is the history of Kirovsky District?
In 1755 Nikita Beketov, governor of Astrakhan, founded the village of Otrada, now Staraya Otrada, and the settlement of Beketovka. The Civil War around Tsaritsyn left many sites here. The district has borne its present name since 16 March 1935, and in 1949 Giprogor of Moscow drew up its general plan, when the city was Stalingrad.
Aleksandra Pakhmutova, the composer, was born here. So was the film director Elem Klimov.

Kirovsky District lies about 15 kilometres from the centre of Volgograd. It borders the city's Sovetsky and Krasnoarmeysky districts and Svetloyarsky District of the oblast, and covers 71.96 square kilometres, with a pier on the Volga and the Second Longitudinal Highway running through it.
