The tractor works came first. The district was formed in 1936 around the great Stalingrad plant, later renamed the Volgograd Tractor Plant, whose workshops kept turning out armour even as the Battle of Stalingrad reached the factory floor. Fighting scarred every street.
The Monument to Dzerzhinsky still recalls the plant's Soviet name, while much older ground survives at Sukhaya Mechetka, a Stone Age site on the right bank of the Volga north of the works.
