About Krasnooktyabrsky District

What are the main landmarks in Krasnooktyabrsky District?

The Monument to Mikhail Panikakha stands over the district, marking the marine who threw himself at a German tank during the fighting for the Red October plant. Culture houses gather the workers' quarter. The Gagarin Palace of Culture and the older Lenin Palace of Culture staged concerts and film for the factory shifts, while the Stalingrad Circus drew families from across Volgograd.

Sport has its own ground at Monolit Stadium, and the Monument to the heroes of defense of Red Tsaritsyn recalls an earlier fight along the Volga. Steel and memory sit side by side.

What is the history of Krasnooktyabrsky District?

The district takes its name and its shape from the Red October steelworks, whose furnaces made this a company quarter long before it was drawn as its own borough of Volgograd in 1936. War tore through it. Some of the fiercest fighting of the battle for Stalingrad was waged over the Red October plant and the neighbouring Barrikady gun factory, and mass graves of the 138th Rifle Division and the 62nd Army still lie among its streets.

Rebuilding followed the smokestacks back up.

Where is Krasnooktyabrsky District?

Krasnooktyabrsky District runs along the west bank of the Volga in the northern factory belt of Volgograd, a flat industrial quarter threaded by Lenin Prospekt between the Red October works and the river.
