The district carries Volgograd's memory of the 1942 battle. The Volgograd Panorama Museum stands above the Volga, its rotunda wrapping visitors in the fighting for the city, while the Square of the Fallen Fighters holds the eternal flame at the district's centre. Older stone survives too.

What is the history of Tsentralny District?

Tsentralny took its shape in 1935, carved out as the central district of what was then Stalingrad. Its ground is older than the name. The Fire tower no.1 of Tsaritsyn survives from the merchant town of Tsaritsyn that stood here before the district lines were drawn.

War almost erased it. The fighting of 1942 flattened the core around the Square of the Fallen Fighters, and the rebuilt avenues, the Volgograd railway station, and the memorials that followed gave the district the ceremonial face it wears above the Volga.
