What are the main landmarks in Sovetsky District?
Industry left the monuments here. The Maximov Brothers Factory, its plant management and heating buildings, and the Smirnov tannery mark the district as a working quarter long before it was a residential one, and the Petrov Palace of Culture crowns the settlement raised for the Petrov works. The railway carries the rest.
Yelshanka railway station, its service sheds and the railway depot form a cluster of listed brick around the tracks.
What is the history of Sovetsky District?
The district dates from 1931. It was carved out of Volgograd as a separate borough once the Maximov Brothers Factory, the leather works run by Smirnov and the yards around Yelshanka had drawn enough workers to need their own quarter, and the Petrov works soon anchored a planned settlement of its own. War scarred it.
A common grave holds workers of the Elektroles plant who fell defending Red Tsaritsyn, a reminder that this rail suburb sat on the fighting ground of Volgograd.

Sovetsky District covers about sixty square kilometres on the Volgograd side of the Volga, its low ground threaded by the rail line that made it and slopes falling toward the river valley below the Yelshanka works.
