Hougang is an estate first. Beds sit among flats rather than in a hotel quarter, and the choice really comes down to whether you want the Tou Mu Kung Temple side of the town or one of the neighbouring planning areas. Serangoon and Paya Lebar flank it.
Sengkang closes the northern side, and any of the three sits close enough to reach the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary without leaving the North-East Region.

Hougang is the largest housing estate in Singapore by land area, so the walk between the church and the temple crosses block after block of flats rather than any historic core.
What is the history of Hougang New Town?
Aukang came first in speech. The name still runs alongside Hougang, and the town that grew around it became a mature residential estate rather than a commercial centre, spreading until it covered more land than any other housing estate in Singapore. Planning fixed the neighbours.
Sengkang took the ground to the north and Toa Payoh the ground to the southwest, leaving Hougang as the block between them in the North-East Region.
