Tampines Bike Park is the named landmark of the town. It sits on ground made unusually level by the sand quarrying of the 1960s, which stripped the old Tanah Merah terrain and left the flat surface that the regional centre of the East Region was later built across. Riders come for the trails.
Everything else worth a detour belongs to the neighbours, with Changi to the east, Pasir Ris to the north, and Bedok and Paya Lebar to the west.
What is the history of Tampines New Town?
Tanah Merah is the older name for this ground. Tampines took shape inside that historical region, and the flatness underfoot is not original: large-scale sand quarrying through the 1960s cut the terrain down well before the new town was laid out. Five subzones make it up.
