The inland half of the city is the other proposition, spread across the low ground of eastern Contra Costa County along the roads that run back toward the rest of the East Bay, and it is the practical choice for anyone treating Antioch as a base for driving rather than as a destination in itself. Expect a working city rather than a resort. Rooms are functional, the streets are laid out for cars, and the pleasures on offer are the water and the open country beyond it rather than a walkable core of sights.
That suits some trips exactly. Anyone here for the San Joaquin River and the Sacramento River where they braid into the delta will get more out of a waterfront address than out of proximity to the freeway, while anyone commuting into the San Francisco Bay Area each morning should reverse that logic and take the inland side. Distances inside the city are short either way, so the choice is about what you want outside your window rather than about how far you will have to travel.

What is Antioch known for?
The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta opens along the city's waterfront, a braided sheet of channels and islands formed where the Sacramento River and the San Joaquin River run together before reaching tidewater. Antioch is the East Bay's inland outpost. What is the history of Antioch?
The site explains itself. Antioch grew where the flat eastern end of Contra Costa County meets the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, on a shoreline that had deep water and a clear route inland long before it had any road worth the name, and a town on that bank was in contact with the interior from the beginning. The channel did the work.
Traffic moved between the interior of California and the San Francisco Bay Area through the delta, which put the place on a working route rather than at the end of one, and the Sacramento River and the San Joaquin River between them carried far more than the wagon tracks of the same period ever could. Growth arrived later, and it arrived from the west. As the East Bay filled in along the bay shore, its expansion pushed eastward across Contra Costa County until it reached Antioch, and the city took on the shape it still has: an inland half laid out for driving, a waterfront half still turned toward the delta.
Its make-up changed with that growth. Over the second half of the twentieth century the city became markedly more varied in background and origin than the river town of earlier generations had been, a shift that reshaped its schools, its shops, and its streets. The two halves have never quite merged.
One side of Antioch looks at the water, the other at the road back to the bay, and the distance between those two outlooks is the shortest way to understand the place.

The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta reaches the city's own frontage, which makes arrival by boat a genuine option here in a way it is not across most of the San Francisco Bay Area.
