The beach end governs everything else. Rooms along the shoreline put the seven-mile coast, the coves and the cliff paths at the door, while the Carlsbad Santa Fe Depot marks the old village core just behind them and keeps restaurants and the rail platform within walking distance. The California Surf Museum and the Museum of Making Music are both in reach of that core.
Inland is the Legoland California side. Hotels there are built for families arriving with a car, close to the park gates and to the Wave Waterpark, with the trade-off that the sea becomes a drive rather than a stroll. Ranch country begins further back.
Rancho De Los Kiotes stands out on that side, quieter and much thinner in beds, and it suits you if the point of the trip is open ground rather than surf. Mission San Luis Rey de Francia and the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum lie inland too. San Diego is thirty-five miles down the coast for anyone who wants a city rather than a beach town, and Los Angeles sits far enough up the road to count as a separate journey.

What is the history of Carlsbad?
The mission came first. Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was raised inland from the shore, and the ranch system that surrounded it left its mark on the land in holdings such as Rancho De Los Kiotes, which kept its acreage long after the coast had been parcelled up. The railway made the village.
Carlsbad Santa Fe Depot stands where the trains stopped, and the settlement that gathered around that platform is still the recognisable core of the city, with the Charles A. Braun House and the Charles Libby House left from the same period. Tourism replaced farming as the business of the place. The seven-mile coastline drew visitors first, then the golf industry took root and built a working economy around it, and Legoland California later gave the city a destination that fills rooms well away from the water.
Museums followed. The California Surf Museum, the Museum of Making Music, the Craftsmanship Museum, the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum and the WWII/Korea LVT Museum all belong to that later stage, when San Diego County had the visitors to support them. The Oceanside Museum of Art sits just up the coast.

How do you get to Carlsbad?
Most arrivals drive up or down the coast. Downtown San Diego is thirty-five miles south and downtown Los Angeles about eighty-seven miles north, so the run along the shore makes Carlsbad an easy stop from either direction. Trains still call at the Carlsbad Santa Fe Depot.
Legoland California and the Wave Waterpark take most of their traffic off the inland approach, which is why the beach and the park fill from different sides of the city. Parking is the constraint at the shore.
