What is the history of Concord?
The town began as Todos Santos. Don Salvio Pacheco II, a Californio ranchero, founded it in 1869 on ranch land in what became Contra Costa County, and the Spanish name lasted only until the change to Concord. One adobe outlasted that world.
The Vicente Martinez Adobe belongs to the Californio period Pacheco came out of, and the Don Francisco Galindo House and the Borland House record the decades after the new name took hold. The Bay Area reached it eventually. Concord turned into a regional suburban centre of the East Bay, one of the larger cities of the San Francisco Bay Area, sitting some 29 miles east of San Francisco itself.
Wartime added a heavier entry. The Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial commemorates the events at the naval magazine it is named for, and it is the one entry on the Concord register that belongs to a national story rather than a local one. John Muir belongs to the same county.
The John Muir National Historic Site preserves the ground that carries his name, and it draws visitors who would otherwise have no reason to stop in this part of Contra Costa County. The amusement parks came much later.
